evanduz
That is a real bummer. It was such a time saver in previewing midi files from some of the libraries I have. Now I have to go through and open each one.... Definite bummer!

evanduz
After all of these months, anyone come up with any ideas for quick preview of midi files without having to open them within a program? Why oh why did they take this away? It is driving me crazy!

Why oh why did they take this away? It is driving me crazy! I just found out this is related to the new AV Foundation framework: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/technotes/tn2300/_index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS40012852-CH1-INTRODUCTION Apparently QTKit is on its way out and so the future of previewing files from the Finder looks uncertain right now. Some info in this Mac Rumors thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=18508187&postcount=40 J.
thedivisionbell
There's still no fix for MIDI files on 10.9? This is incredibly frustrating.
Danny Wyatt
Digging through really old threads... If you still have that need to preview MIDI files and QuickTime 7 doesn't work on your macOS anymore, try VLC (it's free). it's not the same as QuickLook, I know, but you can drag and drop a lot of MIDI files and preview them. Here's how (you need a SoundFont file, like a piano or something): Steps: https://wiki.videolan.org/Midi/ SoundFont: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5gPxvwx-I4KWjZ2SHZOLU42dHM The part where it says FluidSynth, in my version is called AUMIDI, just so you don't panic haha Hope it helps, if there's anyone still trying to achieve this after all these years!

Here's how (you need a SoundFont file, like a piano or something): Hi Danny, your post has prompted me to see if I could try and solve this issue using Keyboard Maestro. I've had some success, but I'm having problems detecting when VLC has finished playing the clip. I've submitted a question at the Keyboard Maestro Forum. Anyone interested can join me in following the progress of the enquiry here https://forum.keyboardmaestro.com/t/quicklook-midi-macro-v9-0-5/18117?u=carlcaulkett
carlcaulkett
In fact, I seem to stumbled upon an entirely acceptable workflow, because VLC seems to terminate when I press any key or make a mouse movement. This means I can cursor down though a list of .MID files in Finder (Total Finder in my case with the visor locked), press space to listen to the MIDI file, and then cursor down when I want to quit VLC, and then cursor down again to move to the next file. This happy state of affairs was entirely accidental. If you look at the macro code, you'll see that I was attempting to make it so that VLC would automatically terminate when the clip had finished playing. Somehow my incompetence has delivered an improved outcome!
