Rhodes54
I'm getting this issue where instances of exs24 or Studio Horns or Strings will act as if Sustain is down and I have to reach for the Panic button. If I change the preset inside the instrument, it goes a way for a few minutes and then comes back. I have Sustain blocked in that channel strip. Doesn't happen with any other instruments, only EXS24 and the Studio. I don't know where to start. Seems like if it were some mysterious mapping, it would occur in ALL plugins not just the sampling ones. Thanks!
Atlas007
Wild guess: the Articulation ID setting...
Rhodes54
Where do I find the Articulation ID editor in Studio Horns? I use Mainstage mostly, rarely do I open Logic, but I'd like to learn how to "play" Studio Horns and Strings instruments using Articulations via controllers or key maps. All I've been able to find is instructions on how to add articulations in Logic AFTER recording. Can you point me toward a tutorial or walkthrough on using articulations on the fly in Mainstage? (Y'know, after I fix these "stuck notes") Thanks
Dewdman42
Mainstage has an articulation set editor but I can’t remember now how to find it. In there you can configure mainstage to respond to midi messages that will assign articulation is to notes on the fly as you play
Atlas007
Here is some documentation that could be useful... Delving into it could yield a solution to your issue.
Rhodes54
There some valuable information in there about the EXS24 to be sure, but I'm still not seeing where you edit Articulations in Studio Horns. All I see is what's in the image that I posted. Am I missing something obvious?
Atlas007
Did you read every section related to it?
Rhodes54
I found all the articulations settings in the EXS24 editor, but I’m not seeing where they are in Studio Horns. This is as far as I got: https://help.apple.com/mainstage/mac/3.4/?lang=en#/lgcp19d099e1
Atlas007
Pushing your reading effort to the next section, right after the one you pointed in your last reply should answer your quest...
Rhodes54
Well, I'm getting a lot closer. At least I found the articulation editor. (Hint for anyone following; it's not in the instrument, it's in the Channel Strip Inspector at the bottom). Looking at the editor, I still haven't figured why in SOME instances notes are "stuck" and other instances aren't. Eventually, I'd like to be able to trigger with pressure, velocity, modulation or maybe the buttons on a Korg NanoKontrol rather than giving up "keys" at the bottom of my controller. I'm digging in here: https://help.apple.com/mainstage/mac/3.4/?lang=en#/lgcpcdb7b2d4 but it sure would be swell to find a youtube tutorial or even a paid lesson. Rhodes54
I'm still not getting it. Rather, I'm still getting "stuck" notes when playing Studio Horns. (When I say "stuck", I mean the sample plays from beginning to end, regardless of taking finger off the note) Sometimes late at night, I think I've got it working right and then Save. When I reopen the Concert, the issue comes back. It doesn't happen in ALL instances. Here is a screen shot of TWO side-by-side windows of the Articulation Editor "Switches" tab from different Patches. The one on the left is from a patch that consistently works as expected. The one on the right, the notes play the whole sample. Note that they're both using the SAME "Just a Test" Articulation profile. One works, one doesn't. (I didn't include a side-by-side shot of the Articulations tab, but they are also identical) Also note that Midi Remote is OFF for both. What am I missing? Please send help! PS In a Horns channel strip that I create from the Channel Strip Inspector > Studio Horns; if I click on Channel Strip > Input > Horns...SOMEtimes the EXS24 opens and other times opens the Studio Horns Smart Controls. No idea why that happens. Is it related?
Atlas007
Not sure anout that, but I think that EXS 24 is the sampler used by the Studio Instruments. That would explain the former is showing up, depending on how you invoke the plugin. In EXS editor the samples (articulation) has a parameter to make them play all the way through (what you describe as stuck note). IIRW, that parameter is called 1shot... Some presets are seemingly using the same...
Rhodes54
I don't know how to get to the sample editor when the Studio Horns Smart Controls pop up, but the instance where the EXS24 pops up, none of the 1shot boxes are ticked in the editor. If I change the instrument to anything else within the EXS and then BACK to the (in this case) Baritone sax, the problem goes away. So I Save, Quit and reopen. Problem is back. Atlas007
That's odd... Are you using MIDI Fx plugin? When you get the plugin to work as you wish, do you save the plugin preset and the channelstrip patch and then save the concert project also? Rhodes54
No MIDI FX Got the patch working and saved in all three places like you said, with new names. Closed and reopened. Problem returns. For testing purposes, if I reload the newly saved .pst, .cst or .exs the problem goes away. But that's to be expected. It just doesn't stay fixed. Even just switching to another patch and back, the problem returns. Thanks for sticking with me on this. My only recourse is going back to the Garageband horns. Atlas007
Perhaps there is some kind of concert file corruption or a bug... Have you tried MainStage under another (new) user account?
Rhodes54
I thought of that. Troubleshooting 101, right? But won’t all my sounds, samples and custom exs instruments be stored at the user level? In ~/user/Music and ~/user/Library/Application Support instead of at the root level? Don’t remember if I mentioned this before, but I’ve had the issue in other Concerts.
Atlas007
Worth trying, I guess...
Rhodes54
What I’ve done so far is delete ALL articulations, except for Sustain and Growl (triggered by Velocity) That seems to be working (And saving consistently) I’ll try bringing them in one at a time and testing. Atlas007
Perhaps there are (were) ArtID assignments conflicts...
