Computer Stupidity Stories!

Sun Jun 09, 2013 2:11 pm

Hi all! Thought it might be fun to start a thread where we share 'derp' moments with our macs–

I just went on a frantic search for multiple 1/8" audio cables, as I was only getting output from my right speaker. I thought my Macbook audio jack was broken (which wouldn't have been a problem in the 'studio' as I use an external sound card).

Turns out I had somehow panned my audio entirely to the right in global audio settings. Derp!

 mwahahahahahah.... nearly spat my tea out into the headphones I was accidentally using as an ahstray!

I don't know if this is apocryphal or not but the story goes... Van Morrison walks into the studio one morning, sits down at the piano and plays a tune. He then wanders into the control room, where the Tape Op, the only person in there, is sweeping the floor and says "play that back to me"

I will leave to your imagination the chaos that is said to have ensued.

My wife and I have a policy. If a movie has British Accents and Oboes, I'm automatically excused.

'Withnail & I'? There must be an oboe in there somewhere.

I was just looking at some youtube screencast of a Logic session fullscreen and I repeatedly tried to drag faders or select regions...

Not Logic related but - 2 dumb things...

1. I remember once standing at my front door and I couldn't figure out why it would not open. That's when I realized it was because I was using my Car Door clicker and not my house keys haha.

2. Back in the 80's I finished laying down an Acoustic Piano Track and I took my headphones off and set them on the piano bench next to me. I heard the Engineer say something to me over talkback and like an idiot I picked up the headphones and held them up to my mouth and said OK like it was a mic or a walkie talkie. The rest of the day everyone would answer me by picking up a coffee cup or whatever was handy just to punk me.

Hahaha I loved that story. My kid always tries to talk into the baby monitor, even though I insist on explaining it's just a speaker.

Well, it's not Logic Pro, but just as stupid. One winter, to have something to do, I built a little 5 watt tube amp kit. Easy as pie. When I got done, I spent about 30 minutes going over the diagram and my wiring to be sure I didn't make a mistake. It all checked out. Moment of truth. Plugged a speaker and guitar in, flipped the power switch....nothing...no lights, no anything except my sinking heart. Quickly turn it off. Flip it over, triple check the wiring and component orientation. Still looked ok. Try again. Nothing. <sigh>. It was then that I noticed it wasn't plugged into the wall socket. DoH!
In the end it sounded great.

Ah well, after reading this, I don't feel like it's 'END-TIMES' for my brain.
Worst thing, I think, I ever did was plug a guitar into the audio interface, while the other end was plugged into my VOX, lol.

But then there was that little input monitoring thing that caught me out twice in a couple of weeks. I'm much better now.
