ew1
If you have a track that peaks at -2 dBFS and you want it to peak at say -6, you can use the gain plugin to remove 4dB, leaving you with a track that peaks at -6. Yes, you could do that, but the question is why. But in terms of tone, timbre, colour and character, is the track that has been gain reduced to peak at -6 exactly the same as what that track would sound like if it had actually been recorded with a real peak level of -6? Would those 2 tracks be exactly the same, not in terms of volume, but in terms of tone, character etc? For all intents and purposes yes, they would have the same tone and character. The difference could be measured with a detailed analysis, but not heard. Thank you.
JZC
Hi Mr. Lagerfeldt, I found this post 10 years after you posted the pdf. It seemed that many found it very helpful, and it would address many of my questions. I was wondering if it is still available somewhere as I dont see it on your website anymore. Thank you! Holger Lagerfeldt
Hi, Thanks! I've switched servers and probably some links are broken, I'll take a look! If you click on the iink doesn't it redirect you to the following? https://www.onlinemastering.dk/how-to-get-mastering#mixdown There's some practical info on levels in my FAQ as well. JZC
Thanks for replying! It does redirect. It just doesn't have the pdf and from the previous posts, the content seemed different so I thought to ask.
Holger Lagerfeldt
Thanks, I'll see if it makes sense to dig up the PDF and put it on a separate link.
