Advanced layering and DAHDSR envelopes in EXS24

EXS24 in Logic Pro X has full DAHDSR envelopes for the filter as well as for the amplitude. It is named Dly AHDSR and it works by applying offsets to the envelopes in the EXS24 window. To access them you have to go to the Instrument Editor and create a group at the Groups pane by going to Group > New Group. Make sure in the View dropdown box (at the Groups pane) you have selected:

  1. Group: Enevelope 1 Offsets
  2. Group: Enevelope 2 Offsets

The zones which it should have impact on must be assigned to the group (you can easily do this by dragging the zone in the Zones pane to the group).

Using groups you can also apply some serious layering to your samples where one layer has different envelope settings and filter settings (cutoff resonance) than other layers. Useful for

  1. creating drum kits where each sound has its own attack
  2. Deep layered sounds where each layer has its own filter cut-off and envelope settings

Some additional remarks:

  1. The time values in the envelope offsets are given in milliseconds. With a maximum of 9999 ms and a minimum of 9999 ms. (you can find this out by hovering with the mouse over the value)
  2. The sustain values in the envelope offsets are a percentage with a maximum of 50% and a minimum of 50%. So to reach every sustain value in the interval of [0%, 100%] the sustain value in the EXS24 main window must be set to 50%.
  3. Remember to assign the zones the settings should apply to to groups. It is easy to make the mistake of changing the offsets while you do not hear the impact of them because the zone you think it should apply to is not assigned to the group.
  4. This makes it possible to make very accurate conversions of SoundFonts (.sf2) to EXS24. You will only miss independent LFO for each sample. In EXS24 you can only apply LFO at a global level.
