Justin-Ch
Freeze can make a major difference, but here are some tips that can help save little bits. Make sure other apps are not open in the background. Close any unnecessary windows & plug-in GUIs on your current Screenset. Make sure there aren't any open windows hidden behind the main one you are working with. In the Arrange window, hide the Parameters on the left so no power is used to animate the meters in the Channel Strip. Also, I've noticed the Arrange page seems to use slightly less CPU than the Mixer or Audio layer in the Environment if they have lots of meters being animated. As a last resort, have a completely empty Screenset & go to that. I tested all of these with a freeware preference pane called MenuMeters which is permanently in the menu bar so can be used for any apps. I have it set to give a numerical percentage reading.
