Installing AU/AAX or VST/VST3 plug-ins for Mac. What's the difference and is it important?

Logic only supports AU, so you can choose not to install any of the other formats if you're only using Logic.

AU is the Mac system standard audio plugin format.

AAX is ProTool's own proprietary plugin format.

VST(2) and VST3 are Steinberg's proprietary plugin format, which are the unofficial standard on the PC platform, and are used by Steinberg software on the Mac.
