Unapproved update to Sonoma left me unable to bounce from Logic Pro - FIXED

Just wanted to share this in the hope that it helps someone else. There's a wonderful "Apple gift" going round where peoples machines are updating invisibly to Sonoma in the background. I totally got clobbered by it! My M1 Air rebooted and voila! Straight from Monterey. Scary... Unbelievably all my plugins and projects still worked but I had frequent Finder crashes (including wouldn't copy or delete files) and Logic (although working fine for "work") would hang if I tried to bounce. Clicking Ok on the bounce dialog to get to the filename and location popup led to beach ball and then after about a minute hanging he window would vanish and I'd be returned to the project. No error messages.

New user worked fine but any plugin where the authorisation was linked to the user account or a location within the users folder needed to be re-authorised. Tried everything I could think of. Including fruitless hour and a half with Apple Support trashing preferences, fixing permissions, different versions etc etc etc. Managed to work out a fix for me in the end tho...

Log out of my apple ID and back in again.

Hope this helps someone else! It was awful. I actually feel violated. Hopefully Sonoma remains stable for me now... BTW I was fully time machined etc but didn't want to go down that route unless I absolutely had to as I'm fighting deadlines at the mo.

You're aware that in System Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates "i" → Install MacOS Updates (on Ventura; the path may be different on Monterey) is a switch where you can turn automatic updates off?

But alright, I have to agree that Apple has done a lot in the past few years to carefully hide this setting from the average user. Nonetheless, since many years this is always one of the first things I'd double check whenever I have upgraded a Mac or bought a new one. If you are working professionally using your Mac, you want to be in full control.

Unless you have literally terrabytes worth of data on the internal drive and your primary hourly backup is on a networked Time Capsule (my case), reverting from a TM backup on an external USB drive should be usually a matter of a few hours overnight.

My apologies, but obviously it's not a "user error", after all.
Today I just read this:

So it's a brand new MacOS bug.
Watch out, folks…

Apology grateful accepted! Yeah... it's pretty real...

Thankfully Logic Pro 10.8.1 and Sonoma are remaining stable for me and all the plugins I rely on are working so I'm moving onward but it's way out of order and rather scary.
