Synch Issue with Logic and Moog Sub 37 (external midi)

First off , I need to thank @Jordi Torres for helping resolve so many issues, including mine.

This video I did was made to demonstrate a specific sync issue between Logic and External MIDI, namely the Moog Sub 37.  It was already a big enough rabbit hole to just solve the clock handshake between these. Then…. Just as I began to achieve a positive result, another issue pops up.

The Moog’s arp will sync to Logics clock, but when I engage the LATCH mode on the Moog, upon releasing the keys, it only arps one note! As you can see , I was able to solve that issue, but what you don’t see in this video, is the fact that Logic won’t record midi after changing the midi in channel , as that is how I was able to fix the Latch issue !!

Hi John,

So apparently your Moog's arp latch stops working when the MIDI data the Moog receives is on the same MIDI channel as the MIDI data it sends.

However, as your Moog is currently set to output on MIDI channel 1 (on the Moog's settings), by setting the MIDI In Channel in your Logic's track parameters to MIDI Channel 2, you are basically telling Logic to ignore incoming data on all other MIDI channels and that's why you cannot record.

Perhaps you could try setting the MIDI In and Out Channels to different channels on the Moog, (for example, MIDI In Channel to Channel 2, MIDI Out channel to Channel 1) and then in Logic leave the MIDI In Channel to 1 or All, and the MIDI Out channel to 2.

Well…I was able to resolve this . @Jordi Torres's suggestion forced me to sit down, and try a few things.
Here’s a video of how I was able to resolve it.
I used to think I knew what Local control was doing. Apparently I was wrong.

Transcript of the video:

Hello everyone, well the sync issue that I was talking to Jordy Torres about between logic and external midi I tried a few things. Some of the things that Jordy recommended changing the midi Channel this is what I was I'm starting with everything's just pretty much on all and then on the editor for the Moog M channel in All Med Channel out is set to one I did try to fix this issue that we were talking about namely the latch feature when you let go of the keys it would just play one note I could fix that problem by tricking it and just throwing the midi channel in to a different Channel but then it wouldn’t record so back to square one well now figured out at least I think I do the local control where it says keys that I turned off which I just want to say I think we've all been a little bit confused over local control and exactly what it means I think in this case when you're using the clock of logic to handshake with the external moo we didn't really need local control to be on because when local control is off the keyboard namely the Moog will only transmit midi and not the internal sounds which I know it sounds weird because still are using the Moog and its sounds but apparently we didn't need the local feature on on the subsequent 37 editor and that's how I was able to to solve this just turn the local off on the editor and everything is recording everything's working in my workflow a lot of songs begin this way just recording with the arpeggi on the moo and that has apparently solved this for me so big thanks to Jordie for helping me uh find my way out of this Rabbit Hole um so I will play and then and it’s staying so now let's see if it’ll record yep we’re recording so right there the local control I turned that off because the default is that all these are on I don’t want to bore you guys with all the tests that I ran but just know that it's I did try all the midi channels switch switcheroos um none of that worked but evidently turning the the local control the keys uh button depressing that fix the the issue allows you to use the latch feature and also be able to record the midi um so that fixed it I'm sure that I'll run into something that as a result of that CA some other problem but um we can only hope.

I get a bit OCD about trying to figure out an answer of why certain quirky things happen , and finding an explanation . I've been sitting here trying to determine if this is just a glitchy thing , or if my understanding is lacking on something technical. The latter is likely the case.  I just don't understand how/why the Local control had anything to do with this issue.

The Moog Subsequent 37 is an analog synth, but unlike Moogs of old, this one has MIDI , via USB as well as DIN.( I haven't used DIN midi cables since the early 90's).  I am no MIDI wizard. I find most of my "right" ways of recording methods by way of discovering a whole lot of "wrongs". My apologies for the greenhorn video. I just think trying to type out the complex nature of this issue would've been long winded. This same issue was brought up in this forum back in March of 2022 by Olejako, where they were dealing with the same exact issue of fixing the Latch problem, only to discover Logic wouldn't record the MIDI.  I hope this helped someone.

Yes,  well you got me thinking on the right track. It’s just odd that that Local (keys) button doesn’t need to be turned off for any other reason. With Local left ON, the Moog will sync perfectly with Logic while I hold down a chord (arp). It will even record the individual midi notes…. just not if you are using Latch.
I should mention, I am going usb from the Moog straight to the Mac. The Moogs audio is going to my Apollo interface.  I mention this , because some people might be connecting midi from external to the interface (an interface that has midi). That difference might have slightly different issues/results.

Thank you John for adding your video explaining how you resolved your issue. I've added a transcript of the video for accessibility and search engine indexing purposes.

Dear God ….reading my transcript is dizzying.
apologies.
