Creator of Sound
Can someone walk me through the process of side-chaining. I'm working on a trance song, but I want to add side-chaining to the kick and the bass so that when the bass is playing the kick ducks out. I'm not too familiar with side-chaining at the moment, you see.
David Nahmani
I want to add side-chaining to the kick and the bass so that when the bass is playing the kick ducks out. Huh.. are you sure you want to do that? That's highly unusual, as kick is THEE major component of a dance track, and you usually want it at a constant level: LOUD (unless of course you're in a breakdown). So usually people sidechain to get the opposite effect: the bass ducks out when the kick plays. That's achieved by placing a compressor on the bass channel strip, and setting its sidechain to the kick track.
Creator of Sound
Yeah, that's what I meant. I'm interested to know how to do it either way, as I also compose Drum and Bass.
David Nahmani
Well for the other way do the opposite: insert the compressor on the kick channel strip and choose the bass track as a sidechain. But I've never seen anyone do that and doubt it would sound any good... but experiment for yourself and you'll see.
