Unique Guitar Tones

I picked up this tip from fellow member ERO in a post about conserving resources.

In the "good old days", one way to get unique guitar tones was micing two or more amps when recording your part. Tape and mixer real estate was precious, so the mics were usually blended to get the tone and then printed to tape.

We can do the same thing (with even more flexibility) in Logic.

The following example gives us three different tones that can be blended into one unique tone.

1. Enable Software Monitoring.

2. Set the Input of an Audio Channel Strip to whatever input your guitar is plugged into on your audio interface.

Set the Output of this Channel Strip to Bus 1.

This creates an Auxiliary Channel Strip with Bus 1 as its Input.

3. Click the "+" sign on the left of the Mixer to Create New Auxiliary Channel Strips.

4. When the dialog box appears:

for Number: enter 2

Format: Mono

Input: Bus 1 with Ascending unchecked

Output: Output 1-2.

This creates two additional Aux Channel Strips with Bus 1 as their Input.

5. On each Aux, load an Amp Designer with each set differently.

In this example, I used a super clean Fender tone on Aux 1, a midrangey crunchy Vox tone on Aux 2 and a distorted Marshall tone on Aux 3.

6. Record enable the Audio Channel Strip and use the Aux faders to blend the tones.

7. Hit Record and "let 'er rip". Note: You just recorded a clean uneffected guitar sound.

Now, you can experiment with the amp models, amp settings and Aux faders to get different blends of the three tones.

If you ever want to 'print" your blended tone, you will need to solo the Arrange Track and Bounce.
