Step Entering Notes limited by Key/Scale

Hi everyone,

Some of you know me already from the Electronic & Dance Music Production in Logic Pro class I teach for Logic Pro Help.

I want to start posting tips and tricks here, so here's my first:

Use the Hyper Editor to step enter notes limited to a particular scale

There are many artists that are not musically trained and have no idea what notes to play when composing. A musical scale is mostly composed of 7 notes. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti…then back to Do.

1) Use the pencil tool to create an empty region in the arrange window on a virtual instrument track with an instrument on it. Double click the region and draw in the notes of your scale. If you want more than one octave to work with when in the hyper editor, repeat the scale up and down a few octaves when drawing in the notes. Command-A to select all the notes after entering them.

2) In the Hyper Editor, choose Hyper > Create Hyper Set For Current Events.

3) In the Inspector, click the Hyper Set menu, and name the Hyper Set (the key scale/feeling/whatever).

You now have an awesome custom Hyper Set to draw notes in limited to the scale of your choice that can be used on existing regions or new ones you create with the pencil tool. When entering notes in the Hyper Editor you can instantly move up/down to adjust the notes velocity. Each note can have a separate divisional setting, Pen Width and can even be delayed easily back and forth in time via the Hyper Editor Info Window (bottom left of the Inspector)!…try that in the Piano Roll.

Have fun!

This is amazing thank you! I am learning theory, but this will certainly make it much easier in the meantime (even when i know it).

I am wondering if there's any way to save that hyper set for all projects so i'd just have a library of keys that i can choose from. That's amazing.

Funny, I just stumbled upon Darren's post and wondered the exact same thing. I happen to know a lot of theory but I'm working on speeding up my workflow and this is a great method for me and the work I do.

I know this is relatively old thread but if anyone has the knowledge 1=1? and I seek, perhaps you could post and/or direct us to another thread/topic or forum?

Thanks in advance. :-)

You can import Hyper Sets from one project to another using File > Project Settings > Import Project Settings...

You can create a template with the desired Hyper Sets (you can import hyper sets from projects to your template if you wish). Any project created from that template will have the Hyper Sets readily available. Any project created from another template, you can import the hyper sets from that template to the project.
