tuco
I´m thinking of buying a used G5 Quad tomorrow but I´m not sure if I should save for a Mac Pro instead. But I can get the G5 pretty cheap. Is there a big performance difference between them? Will the G5 still be okay for some time or is it totally outdated?
Dr.Frank
Tuco I am running logic on a dual 2.3G/2.5 G RAM and can push it a lot. Last project 47 tracks, 50 inserts, CPU @50% CF previous post on CPU efficiency. No plug-ins compatibility problems. So for a cheap price go for it and add some RAM. Good luck Frank
David Nahmani
Will the G5 still be okay for some time or is it totally outdated? It is both okay for some time and totally outdated. In the computer world, machines become outdated in about 2 years, and the G5 is a little older than that. The Mac Pro is so much better on many aspects. Also, in the near future, more and more companies will release new plug-ins for the Intel platform only. However, that doesn't mean you can't work with a G5. My main machine in my studio is a Dual 1.8GHz G5 and it is still a great machine. However, personally, I wouldn't buy one today.. but of course it also depends on your finances, and at what level of professionalism you're going to use the machine (10h/day to make a living, or 2h/day for a hobby?).
