Monitoring + recording without "direct monitoring"

Hi.

I am just getting started in Logic Pro on Mac Pro, setting it all up. Unfortunately I had to buy the m-audio ProFire firewire card as a temporary solution - I was using an RME MADI + ADI-648 on the PC - because it is the only PCIe/FireWire solution on the market which gave me enough ADAT inputs for all my sample playback PC's.

Anyway, the ProFire doesn't have hardware monitoring :/ - so temporarily I need to make a software monitoring setup in Logic. But I am running into some troubles.

I found out that I can set up an audio object for each input and then add an I/O helper and set the output on that to the ProFire analog out. Then I have monitoring of all my inputs. Fine. However, I also want to be able to record the inputs. This is where I can't get it working. I have set up an audio track for each input as well. But I don't get any audio signal on those tracks when monitoring is also set up. I guess you can't have several audio objects share the same input. Is there some way around this? I would really prefer that each audio track simply had a "monitor" button, like in Cubase, but it doesn't seem that is available in Logic.

You should not need an I/O plug for this - just an Input object to monitor and a track to record. As is, you could prolly just bypass the I/O on the input object and be able to record(?) by assigning the track to the input...

I don't understand that, can you give me an example with a procedure on how to set this up?

There are no "input objects" in Logic - just audio objects? And you can't set an audio object to be in record mode (with the purpose of monitoring) and then redirect that signal to another audio object to record it as far as I can see.
