By default there area few but when you choose to customize only Space and Flexible Space are choices to use for separating the icons. A menu will pop up. Select Customize Toolbar. You can drag the Separator to any place on the Tool Bar. Flexible Space will create a space between two icons as wide as possible, depending on amount of icons used in the toolbar. In other words, it will shrink or expand if you add or remove items.
