advise on a good database software 2 keep track of plug ins?

Hi again

We are all in debate with trying to decide what software we should use to keep everything organized here in our studio.

We want to be able to have customizable columns that we can name when ever with view functions alphabetically or numerically as Excel offers but we also want to see details of the products as in photos as well., is there anything that does this?

One guy suggested to simply use Excel, he showed off how we can make tabs to sort by a category we make alphabetically, across the screen where expandable columns where he had divided it by Manufacture. Software plug name, Version, type of plug (au, rtas, tdm etc), serial number, compatibility (PPC, UB), but then again, no way to open the sections to see a foto.

Can anyone advise on a good software database innovatory with the function above including a way to see fotos of the products?

I haven't used it in years, but FileMaker Pro is $299 and they have a 30 day free trial download. They even have a page geared toward creative professionals:

Delicious Library ($40) is pretty slick looking. It's designed to track your books, cd's and videos: it uses your iSight camera to scan the barcode on such boxes. Perhaps it can be coerced into doing what you want. Gotta love their spunky web design.

Or, try searching freshmeat.net for "inventory". Maybe there's an open source solution that'll work. Many of those will probably require MySql and PHP, which are readily available on the Mac, but require some know-how to set up properly.

How geeky do you want to get? You could roll your own with MySql/PHP or Ruby on Rails or Cocoa/Core Data. Or... sorry.

Or maybe you want to focus on making music. :)

Well , like i said above, in columns viewable alphabetically:

Manufacture - Product - Version- Kind of Plug/APP/Sample CD - PPC/UB - Works? - Location

Example-------> iZotop - iDrum - v2 - Software Instrument - PPC √ UB √ - G5 Tower, MacBoook Pro

We have Filemaker 8 in the office, we do not want business software or use bar codes, this is just for our studio to keep the plugs and software organized and up to date.…„

I used to use FileMaker.. now I use both Excel and my own database in php/mySQL. Any of those will do. If you already own FileMaker, I would try that.

Are you sure you can't put pictures in Excel? I would think you can... I've seen people do crazy things with Excel, things I would have never thought you could do with it.

Hi Guys

If you know how to put pictures in excel please tell me, i am going nuts!, i do not even know how to make pop up in the headers of columns to view the categories alphabetically.

I found Delicious Library to be kind of ok, but its for Books, Cds and movies., i cant believe they did not make a software app like this yet.

I have over 20 purchased plug ins, 40 freebies and 4 major applications for audio alone, i use PPC, UB and Xp stuff, i realy like to start keeping record.

Here is some screen shots of delicious and Xcell, if you can advise a better solution please do, thanks for your time guys.

Filemaker 8 pretty much looks the same, i am assuming you can create your own catagories, i have a way to go with that.
