alexfsu
I want to copy the automation from a parameter of one track to a completely different parameter of another track. How do I do that please?
redlogic
1. Select the automation from track 1 and copy it (Command+C). 2. Select track 2 and Paste (Command+V). 3. With the track 2 automation still selected, hold the Command key and click on the Automation Menu of track 2 and select the desired automation type. Click Convert from the pop-up that appears. alexfsu
When I paste the automation, it pastes for the same parameter, not the automation I have selected. Also, where is the Automation Menu with a "convert" button? Thanks.
David Nahmani
You need to read redlogic's instructions more carefully! (everything you need is in there) When I paste the automation, it pastes for the same parameter, not the automation I have selected. Hence step #3. Also, where is the Automation Menu with a "convert" button? Nowhere in the automation menu. But when you follow step #3 you'll see an alert pop up with that convert button. So basically step #3 will convert your automation data from one parameter to another.
alexfsu
Now when I paste to the second track, it asks if I want to copy automation data.
David Nahmani
it asks if I want to copy automation data. Sorry Alex, but you're doing something wrong, I'm not sure what. Try again! If you still get that, please post a screenshot.

David Nahmani
Thanks for the screenshot. Alex, please detail the EXACT steps you're taking: where you click, which key you hold down, at what time, when you get that alert, etc... PS: I'd recommend only keeping the Arrange area open for this exercise, to set aside any potential confusion with the other areas such as Piano Roll etc.
alexfsu
1. shift click to highlight region I want to copy 2. cmd C 3. click on track I want to paste automation 4. cmd V Before I was getting that message. Now nothing happens--no message, nothing.
David Nahmani
1. shift click to highlight region I want to copy You need to do one of the 2 following choices instead: - Command-click the automation meter to the right of the track header, or - Shift-drag around all the automation nodes on the automation lane. alexfsu
Did that, but when I cmd V I still get nothing.
David Nahmani
What if you try to do the same thing with the channel strip's "volume" parameter: does it work then?

alexfsu
ok so I tried opening two new instances of FM8, and did the process again. when I paste the automation, it pastes for the same parameter, regardless if I have a different parameter's lane open. David Nahmani
I addressed that here: viewtopic.php?p=468035#p468035 - so basically you still have to convert the automation to another parameter as in step 3 of viewtopic.php?p=467906#p467906
alexfsu
I addressed that here: viewtopic.php?p=468035#p468035 - so basically you still have to convert the automation to another parameter as in step 3 of viewtopic.php?p=467906#p467906 I'm clicking right here as per step 3, is that the right place to cmd click? alexfsu
The key command for Step 3 turned out to not be "cmd click", but rather "option click". so close, yet so far away
David Nahmani
The key command for Step 3 turned out to not be "cmd click", but rather "option click". Both command and option should work equally well. They do here.
hairy
I think this is the third time you've saved me from a rage induced aneurysm. Apparently it only takes me a week or two to forget that precise and very unintuitive series of steps. The manual is all "just copy and past, man..." No mention of a menu or holding down he command key. Anyway thank you for your efforts. TommyV
I recently helped debug someone that had similar trouble with this. The problem was that he was not CONTINUING to hold down the command key from steps 2 into and PAST step 3. When pasting with command-V, DON’T RELEASE THE COMMAND KEY UNTIL YOU SEE THE POP UP MENU. Press and release the V key to paste your data, then, while CONTINUING to hold down the command key, select your target automation parameter, then the menu pops up, and THEN you can release the command key.
