theprodguy
Why does the Logic compressor distort when using some algorithms and doesn't with others (for example, VCA distorts a lot, Platinum pretty much never for what I can see)?
Eriksimon
Because those algorythms emulate (vintage) hardware that behaved like that. Platinum is reportedly indeed the 'cleanest' of all algo's, and the distortion on the VCA is user-controllable.
theprodguy
the distortion on the VCA is user-controllable. Do you mean that the distortion depends on how much you're compressing?
Eriksimon
That, and look what you get underneath it... http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicstudio/effects/index.html#chapter=4%26section=3%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:TempBookID-ReplacedWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-DYN-1007900
Jordi Torres
Super fast attack and release times will also cause distortion. J.

David Nahmani
The original compressor algo was the "Platinum" algo, and its intention was to be a transparent compressor without coloration (a.k.a. distortion). Many found it to be an exceptional compressor but many others complained that it lacked character (a.k.a. distortion). So Apple decided to emulate the warmth (a.k.a. distortion) of older analog compressors and gave us a few algos to chose from that are emulating the sound of a few of those older pieces of analog gear.
