nginear79
I am looking for an alternative to Auralex... Whether it be foam or panels. I am on a bit of a budget. Under 500 . for a home studio . Does anyone know of any other companies?
David Nahmani
I did my own panels: buy some acoustic fiberglass, wrap it in burlap and make some wooden frames that you can paint whatever color you feel like (mine are translucent black so you can see the lines of the wood..). The tricky part is to find the fiberglass (Owens Corning has the 70x series which is good.. ) and the burlap... However if you have the time and skill to do it, you will end up with much better results. Auralex = foam, which is going to absorb a little bit of your highs but that's it. If anything it's going to deaden the room, but it's not going to make it balanced at all. Rule #1: start with the corners! If you can make some bass traps, that's ideal. Good luck! David Nahmani
PS: there is an acoustic group on groups.yahoo.com where people will help you with that stuff, but I can't seem to find it...
pantomimeHorse
Agree with David - bass traps are the first thing to sort. Corners done all three ways is best. But try rockwool instead of fibreglass - it's denser and gives better trapping, especially behind perforated hardboard. You need at least 10 inches, as the bishop said to the schoolboy ..................
David Nahmani
BTW, a good, useful and not too ugly basstrap: a big heavy sofa with big cushions! Also, try to keep the design of your studio symetrical.
colnago89
Here is what I did. Works great! http://www.teresaudio.com/haven/traps/traps.html
David Nahmani
Excellent! Have you had that site around for a while? I think it's the site I stumbled upon when I was looking for ideas on how to treat my room. Very helpful. Thanks!
colnago89
It is actually not my site. I found it surfing around and kept it bookmarked for this very purpose. They work very well by the way. Here is another great site where he uses the same idea and adapts them in other ways (absobers...diffusers) so that he can tune his room different anytime he wishes. http://www.dougploss.com/tubetrap_diy.htm
