Making $ with Logic, how possible and how much?

Recommended Posts

You hear it over and over again; you should love your job and if you don't, do something you really want to be doing day in and day out. Well, I ponder this as I'm sitting in my office waiting for the next real estate boom in California. Does anyone know just how far you can take the Apple Creative career? My local store does not have a Logic Creative. I'm wondering if I would be hired out to other locations for private lessons and such. Also, being very ambitious, I'm sure that after much networking, I'll get more writing/producing gigs. If anyone has taken this route, or has some career advice, please share with us! Oh, and if you are a possible future employer, please disregard my Bon Scott quote below. It doesn't apply to me, it's just a cool quote!

Hahaha... good quote :D

Well there really are no rules. So much luck comes into play. I mean, for sure, you need to be good to start with. But then you could be good and never get lucky, and get stuck with a crappy job. The only thing that's certain is that if you are NOT good then you will get stuck with a crappy job. If you're good, then you multiply your chances of getting lucky (people will talk about you, and the word spreads fast - and every employer always needs someone good).

After being questioned about the amount of money Apple invests in research and development, Steve Jobs said Apple's capacity to deliver new products is limited only by its ability to find talented new employees capable of great work. "I wish developing great products was as easy as writing a check," he said. "If that were the case, then Microsoft would have great products."

So if you think in terms of the people who hire you, their problem is not that they don't have enough money to hire you, it's that it is SO difficult to hire quality people, hard-working and trust-worthy. If you have those qualities, you will succeed.

Maybe you could talk to your store about starting a creative section. Maybe you could be the first and only creative, and learn FCP, Shake, Motion, Color, Aperture, STP.. on top of Logic.. I'm really not sure, as I've never worked in an Apple Store.

To share a little bit of my experience, a lot of my success in my job could be attributed to being at the right place at the right time, with the right people, and getting noticed. But honestly, the one great opportunity that changed my whole career around came after years and years of very hard work, and me sitting at my stupid job thinking "How come no one has noticed that I can do better? How come no one at Apple has noticed that I know Logic inside and out?"

One great advantage of being a creative is that you'll be making music all day. People will come to you and ask you to produce their tracks, make them sound better, add interesting elements to them... and when no one comes you'll be working on your own tracks. But you will have to learn all the pro apps (which is a great thing!) if you want to be competitive.

Wow, thanks David. Some good common sense advice. I see how learning those other pro apps would be a big plus. Any Logic Creatives out there that may have seen things really open up for them career wise?

Oh, and I love that Steve Jobs quote!!

For a start, that's not just a Bon Scott quote... it's the Aussie way of life!! ...

I wish our gov't has really screwed things up for everybody, now we all gotta work 5 jobs 25hrs a day, 8 days a week. And on top of it get paid less for it, have a family only to pay more money for someone else to look after the kids because the partner has to work 25/8 as well. And we're expected to buy new houses and new cars and run this family with alot less time & money..... Oh wait... this is the Logic forum  ... LOL

It aint to far from the truth though.

Anyway...

Of all things there is now a Mac store in my neighbourhood

Living 1 1/2 hrs out of Melbourne I never thought it would happen. I did theorise about setting up one myself with a mate not that long ago. We didn't have the cash but did think it could be viable if we played the cards right.

I don't know who runs it, but yes i ws thinking of getting aquainted with this person rather quickly. It's in my best interest that he's store does succeed so I was thinking of offering a bit of freebie advice.

The otherside of the coin is maybe he will let me use the upstais space for my studio in exchange for other services. Maybe we could expand the business so that it also specialises in audiovisual production stuff. Providing servces ranging from newspaper ads to film/TV production to doing wedding videos & DVD's. Or maybe there is a possibility to run creative workshops through him, even on the basics like iLife.

I may be getting a bit carried away here but all these are just ideas that MAY be possible. I certainly have alot of the qualifications and experience... in audio that is with contacts who operate on the visual side of things.

Who knows!?!?!... Well I caertainly won't know unless i pick up that phone or drop into the store, and take the chance. If it doesn't workout at least I have a local Mac contact who knows I'm very good at what I do and may come to rely on me later, or refer me to someone else.

As long as I don't make an idiot of myself, it's pretty much a win-win situation. It's all a question of whther it's a little win or a BIG win. :)

As a Certified Trainer I suplement my composing by teaching Logic Pro at UCLA and to private clients. It helps but it certainly would not be what I would characterize as a career in and of itself.

The interesting thing is that being a power user does not necessarily make you valuable to Apple in an area they need: marketing, development, even testing.

In fact, sometimes being really close to and loving a product puts you at a disadvantage to doing good work.

To the original poster: focus on the activity you love to do, not the piece of software you love, 'cause software comes and goes, it's just a tool, a product, a thing that is bought and sold (if you know your Logic history, you'll know what I mean!). Focus on the processes you love: do you love to teach? to help make music? To sell?

That's my career advice. And dudes, I rarely mention this, but I work for a company in Redmond, WA.

Maybe Toysun says he works where I think he may... It's a little hard to decern from the other side of the globe. But if he works where I think he does... maybe he can SPECULATE on just two answers.

1. SPECULATE whether ther will be a new Logic release... it's been WAAAAYYY too long since the last one.

2. SPECULATE whether we are likely to see it within our lifetime!!

And if I've got it completely wrong, just disreguard this as the ramblings of a LUNATIC.

Didn't think my humorous reply would turn this into a "When is Logic 8 coming out?" thread.

I do have an answer: Logic 8 will come out as soon as we all decide which studio monitors are the best.

That's a Logic-Board joke, btw.

 Thought I was off the mark... Bloody hell, I sounded like a backwards Aussie hick.

I thought Redmond was the home base for MS, didn't know about Nintendo though. We have a branch around here... among other development companies. Melbourne, being the words 3rd biggest city in computer game development.

I did know about Cuppertino, but SOMEHOW I was given the impression that Apple may have had another site... couldn't understand what an MS user would be doing surfing the forums of a MAC ONLY app!!... LOL

But all this still didn't stop me from sounding like an IDIOT!!!

LOL...

As far as the speculating bit, I'm sure most will agree is all we really WANT to know is if it IS coming out at all or are we holding our breaths for Hell to freeze over. And if it is will we be likely to see it in our lifetime.

Yes it was a bit of a Hijack but, I think we're all on edge about it's development. In this case no news ISN'T good news. We NEED to know one way or another, while we still have time to investigate other options. Logic is starting to split at the seems a bit here.

Anyway...

i think I'll stop before i dig my hole any bigger. Another foot and it'll be big enough to fit Bill Gates ego!!
