des99
I guess next step is touch macs? This was what the rumour-mill was chattering about when Big Sur betas were released and people noticed the menu items were spaced out a bit more. However, because of this, Apple have come out and outright said that these changes were *not* done to accommodate touch, they didn't even consider people would think that - just part of the feel of the design. Of course, we all know Apple's policies often go along the lines of: - Touch on a Mac? No, we tried it, it sucks, we won't be doing that *time passes* - Touch Macs again? No, we don't think that's a decent product *time passes* - These changes look an awful lot like you're thinking about touch? - No, Macs are a mouse first device, touch is not appropriate for them *time passes* - Product Announcement: Look at our shiny new Touch Macs - they're the most awesomest Macs we've ever made!! seclusion
Finally, I have an auto load template that I setup for playing live (presonus quantum). When I open, play and close, no dialog to ask to save when I close. Yaaa I’ve often done updates, or just practiced etc, such a minor complaint, but I made no changes and would save nothing for next time. des99
I was thinking more along the lines of "Video on an iPod? No-one wants to watch video on a small mobile device!" until the year the "iPod with Video" came out The stylus thing is a bit different, and is widely misquoted to people in that context - but I don't think we all want to get into this here... skijumptoes
When Slate Raven comes free with a 2 year commitment to the 'Everything' bundle, we know Apple have MacOS touch support incoming with full Pro Apps compatibility. Must admit, a new shiny ARM Mac with a touch screen for mixer control is certainly a nice prospect. Especially if Logic adopted some of the drag and drop functionality of Studio One (i.e. drag a plugin to the send slot and a send is created and plugin instantiated). I'd feel like Captain Kirk on the starship. Edited November 17, 2020 by skijumptoes

des99
If they *do* eventually do them, imo touch would be a secondary option for certain interactions, not as a primary way of doing everything. Eventually, I think we're destined to lose physical keyboards entirely. Whole generations would have grown up on touch screens and find typing on a surface perfectly fine - so the keyboard on a lap becomes yet another large touch-surface which can easily be reconfigured for the task. This is currently a bit sci-fi, but I think is where we'll be going form-factor wise down the line - with a bunch of intermediate steps along the way - like the touch bar - which no one bar Apple seems to like at the moment.. Anyway... wayyyy off topic - I'l stop now...

fisherking
Well, new menus and GFX in 10.6 make much more sense when running Big Sur. It feels more iOS-ish, but i'm not totally against this redesign. Big Sur feels and looks the most different since... Probably 10.4 Tiger... El Capitan got "flatter" but generally didn't feel so different, Big Sur feels MUCH different. The layout and UX has changed. Finder Window for feels are your 3rd-party plugins all showing up? that's my only concern (again, early beta, 9 of my plugins would not show)... thanks for the updates & pics! Yes I opened a separate thread about it where i listed most of what I use. except two melda plugs (of 27 i have installed, that i haven't updated so they might work fine with latest updated) everything else validates and shows up

BritishBoxer
My old projects made in 10.4 now crashes after a few seconds when playing back?????Anyone else with this problem?? If you call apple about it they will tell you to buy a new Mac, they suggested to me that a new Mac is merely the price of iPhones these days....with some inconveniences of not been portable. Look guys, we can talk about this on another thread and I do respect the integrity of this site but how can anyone answer the question with out mentioning how Apple has been at this trend now for more then 2 decades, I maybe wrong but Logic 10.4.8 maybe the peak and has since been compromised by Apple's trend of dropping support of anything older then a year now days, NO BACKWARD Compatibility and in some cases not even allowing users to re install older systems or finding their devices slowed down, malfunctioning etc all with the intention to force users to buy new ones. So the solution for your problem is simple, buy an older machine to use only for audio, I remember when the Hit Factory in NY had Mac fx machines with Pro Tools nubus cards, and all while pro tools 24 was out the Hit Factory released records using these old machines for Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Madonna, U2, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Billy Joel etc etc so some times the latest greatest is not all its out to be.....just get an old machine with an older os running Logic 10.4.8 and stay offline. Of course I thought about starting a whole other thread for the 25the time and year as it would help solve 95% of the problems caused by Apple dismantling Logic Pro or crippling machines so users are forced buy new ones, what should really happen is Apple assuring our confidence in products, beta testing them before release and no funny stuff. Sascha Franck
Fwiw, the first Logic benchmark test using an M1 machine (MB Air, it's on Gearslutz) seems to indicate only 4 CPUs are used. ProTools however supports all 8 CPUs - even if it's only running in Rosetta 2 mode. I think that's quite embarassing, given that the Logic programmers should've had plenty of more time to properly prepare for the M1 launch. You can't wait to jump on it can you? lol Apple/Logic team have it running on ARM natively, that's where M1 and Logic should be judged - they're not going to be ploughing efforts into their pro apps running on Rosetta 2 unless completely necessary. If they do, what incentive is there for third party plugin devs to move to ARM? Besides that, this is only one user reporting this? (Not read it). Even though they break eggs early in the process, Apple will not sit wandering in the middle road. As proven the longterm benefits for their progressive approach is for all to see, compare HiDPI applications on the Apple platform vs Windows, likewise the move to 32 to 64-bit apps. Both of which Windows has just been a complete halfway house for years, and it's still a mess.
Sascha Franck
Apple/Logic team have it running on ARM natively, that's where M1 and Logic should be judged Precisely! And that's exactly what's happening: There's only 4 CPUs used by Logic on an M1 machine, obviously with Logic running natively.

And that's exactly what's happening: There's only 4 CPUs used by Logic on an M1 machine, obviously with Logic running natively. Just found that post, and he's really pleased with the performance and says that it shows as 8 cores in activity monitor. "CPU shows up as 4 Cores in Logics performance meter - Does show as 8 cores in Activity Monitor though" also:- "I just ran the same test on my iMac 2020 i7 - ~80 to 100 tracks at 44.1 Fans a blazing - and 44 at 96kHz - 95degC 2600 ish rpm fans." "I wouldn't say the MBA is a powerhouse - but it is the most basic machine and is impressive at more than 1/2 the performance on this test with zero fan noise and minimal heating." For me, it's just reporting wrong in Logic, OR what perhaps the concept of CPU, Cores and Threads is going to change on ARM native apps. I would put more weight into the experience of how the ARM machines run than a figure on screen. And honestly, i don't know how you can arrive at the verdict of 'embarrassing' unless you're deliberately trying to apply a negative bias.. i.e.:- "1080P ProRes Compressor | 2020 iMac i7 5500 XT = 45 sec | M1 MBA = 60 sec"

Wel, well, well, look who’s badmouthing Logic. Who would have guess. One thing to note in those tests that are starting to come out and the specific PT video that you talk about is that on one hand the Logic test on Greaslutz shows Activity Monitor graphs and the PT test on Facebook shows the PT activity meters, two quite different things. Open PT on an Intel 4-core machine with hyperthreading and you’ll see 8 graphs... so doesn’t mean anything. So, if like me, you’re not a computer specialist(and I mean really specialist) I would wait a bit before spitting on Logic about those Reports as there’s a lot of things people don’t know about M1 and all that new stuff. You don't need to be a computer specialist to see there's 4 CPUs idling while using Logic. Just found that post, and he's really pleased with the performance and says that it shows as 8 cores in activity monitor. "CPU shows up as 4 Cores in Logics performance meter - Does show as 8 cores in Activity Monitor though" also:- It still shows that 4 cores are pretty much completely unused. Apart from that, for the first time the usual benchmark suspects don't translate well to Logic (which they pretty much always do). Both Geekbench and Cinebench suggest that multithread performance should be quite higher - it's just that Logic is missing out on it. Whatever it is, as a Logic user, you essentially get a 4-core machine for the time being.

Maybe "automatic" setting in logic bypasses efficiency cores? It still shows that 4 cores are pretty much completely unused.
