HOW TO: View / edit MIDI sustain pedal data in Piano Roll

This started out as a question ... as two videos (one from 2013 and one from 2017 [neither are relevant today, but links provided in case you're curious]) showed two rather different methods to get the MIDI sustain data to display, and neither are applicable to more modern version of Logic Pro.

(I have no idea when it changed to the current method. But as I spent at least 15 minutes trying to figure it out, perhaps this post will save someone that time. Ironically, what actually clued me on to the right method was that older 2013 video, in which there's a mixer looking button you click to access the necessary options. Whereas on the 2017 it's accessed through the View menu. I guess Apple realised having a button was easier and more accessible. So they reinstated a version of it, just with a different icon.)

There is also a more recent video, which shows the current method of revealing the sustain pedal MIDI events.

Simply put ... Here's how:

1. Open the Piano Roll for an MIDI section you wish to work on (i.e. double click on the MIDI region in the track editor)

2. Click on the the link / connector (kinda looking) icon

3. That will reveal a new panel area in on the left side of Piano Roll ...

4. You can select "Sustain" in the selector ....

In my case, there's an entry for "Ch. 1: Sustain" in the "Used" section of the menu that pops up. "Ch. 1" is a reference to the MIDI connection channel (as in MIDI Port 1) used by my MIDI device (a keyboard). If that doesn't show up in your case, you can select "Sustain" further up the menu. Either one will do the trick.

5. Sustain events will now show up graphically in the Piano Roll.

If case you're wondering ...

127 = pedal on

0 = pedal off.

I hope that saves you some time, so you can get back to creating music a little sooner.
