Understanding the different ways to quantize

What's the relationship between these three things?

- Quantize settings in the region inspector
- Quantize settings in the piano roll
- Quantizing an individual note by pressing 'Q'

Some related (but less important) questions might be: Which has priority? Can a region be quantized to one setting, then notes individually quantized to another? Does Logic always remember the note's unquantized position?

I think the priority goes to the last one used...

Other than that:

- region inspector, does it for all selected regions (very quick)

- piano roll / individual note: fine grained control over the position of each individual note.

PS: when exporting MIDI, the quantization in the inspector does NOT export. You first have to "Normalize Region Parameters" or whatever it's specifically called...

There is a hierarchy.
If you perform individual selected note quantize operations in the PR or other editor, using the (Main/Arrange window) region quantize will override the individual note quantize performed in the editor - i.e. every note in the region will be quantized to the selected (Main/Arrange window) region quantize value.
Not sure if this is stored in the Undo History....so don't do it (Arrange-level quantization) if you want to retain your per-note quantize ops.

I'm pretty sure (99%) that if you manually quantize a note in the piano roll _after_ setting quantize settings in the region inspector, it will move to that quantization setting.

And if you then change the region inspector again, that note will move again.

99% sure...

EDIT: Just tested again. Yes. The last edit takes the cake.

So in other words, and to sum this up:

There's no priority. The last quantize action you use will be applied to all the notes inside the region (region inspector) or only the selected notes (piano roll).

Yes.

Yes. Unless you apply the quantization permanently from the Functions menu.
