jerrydpi
Well, when it rains, it does indeed pour 🙂 I "thought" I had a 2TB SSD in my mid 2012 MBP (Model A1286), but it turns out I have a Seagate ST2000LM003 - 2TB 5.4K RPM SATA 9.5mm 2.5" Hard Drive. So: 1) What internal SSD should I go with? 2) Will I need an installation kit? Thanks, Jerry
wonshu
IIRC it's fairly easy to swap the harddrive in a 2012 model, but check ifixit again. I would go with a Samsung Evo and just choose the capacity that fits your budget. But these ones have the correct form factor and the Samsung SSDs are the most reliable on the market. As I have already noted in your other thread, I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 3D 2TB in my MBP mid-2012 (and also in MBP 2008), and it literally just works. They are not the fastest today, but the speed will be limited by the SATA 3 bus anyway so there's no benefit in getting a faster drive at all. 1 hour ago, jerrydpi said: 2) Will I need an installation kit? 44 minutes ago, wonshu said: check ifixit Yep, here it is: Done that a few times over the years. I have the full iFixIt toolkit, but this drive replacement is possible without the special Apple-only screwdrivers, a couple of standard Philips and Torx bits will do. des99
On my old 2011 MBP, I did the whole bit - removed the optical drive, mounted the existing 2.5" spinning drive into the optical bay with a mounting kit, and then put a Crucial SSD in place of the original drive. Worked (and still works) great!

For instance, do I transfer the data with the Seagate still in the MBP to the SSD that will be located outside the computer, or do I transfer the data with the Seagate removed, and the SSD has been installed in its place? I hope I said that right 🙂 🙂

They're very common, just google them. I can't remember which particular model it was, it was probably a decade ago when I did mine... 38 minutes ago, jerrydpi said: 3) Regardless of whether I put the Seagate into the Optical Drive space or not, how do I transfer all the data on the Seagate to the new SSD? jerrydpi
I decided to go with a Samsung 750 EVO (I got a pretty good price on Amazon Prime), and I received it today. I have an external usb enclosure, I put the Samsung into it and formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). As Forrest Gump said, I may be dumb Jenny, but I do know to backup my computer first to the Time Machine 🙂 So once that is done, how do I copy (or is it called transferring? 🙂 ) all the data from the Seagate to the Samsung, and how long should the process take (I have 1.3TB free on the 2TB Seagate HDD)? Danny Wyatt
I'm assuming you will be using the SSD as an internal disk, right? That's what makes more sense to me and then using the HDD inside the USB enclosure as a backup or extra storage, or as suggested, replace the DVD drive with the HDD. jerrydpi
Yes, the SSD will replace the existing HDD.

I’ve been using a program called Carbon Copy Cloner for many years and I’m happy with it. It’s a backup tool and it clones a disk including everything to make it bootable, which is what you want. If you purchase it I would recommend getting in touch with them asking for instructions on how to do it. They are pretty helpful. I always suggest people should have daily backups (if you don’t have a backup system already) and CCC is what I always suggest the time it takes to copy depends on your computer, the disks, if it’s USB 2 or 3, etc

enossified
I’ve used both OWC and SanDisk SATA SSDs to replace internal HDDs in MacBooks. OWC sells kits with some tools and a bus powered enclosure to use when cloning if you don’t have an empty enclosure or drive dock already. Like Des99, I use SuperDuper for the cloning.

That said though, the ultraslim optical "SuperDrives" were always prone to errors. Both Intel MBPs as well as the ancient PowerBook G4 are having their 3rd replacements inside, most of them replaced while still in warranty… 11 hours ago, jerrydpi said: So there is no way to copy/transfer the HDD data to the SDD without buy a third party program? Disk Utility actually has the Restore Disk mode which should do it just fine on a blank target disk. Could be that it was even the method that I used back in 2019, I don't remember. Apps like SuperDuper are more useful if you need to update an existing clone without erasing it first.
jerrydpi
Update: I started the SupeDuper copy process last night at 12:00, and when I went to bed at 2:30, about 60GB had been copied so far. I just woke up, and there were two alerts on my desktop saying the EVO had been improperly ejected. How do I check if the entire copy process has been completed?
wonshu
Just start the copy again and SuperDuper should skip over everything that is on the destination already and only copy what's missing. Should be very quick. My guess is that the MBP went to sleep after SuperDuper finished and turned off the power to the external drive. This sometimes happens and is very unsettling. After it was finished, SD should have remained open, and green, showing you the backup was completed successfully. Are you saying your computer rebooted or something, and SD was no longer running? With the paid version, you can simply do the same job in update mode, and SD will compare the two, and make any changes that are locally different, as a way of double checking. But that's a feature that isn't available in the free version. Otherwise, load the saved script for the backup job, and choose "Show Log" to check it was completed properly. Look for "Copy complete" at the end. Edited September 26, 2023 by des99

You’re correct about the free copy :) When I followed wonshu’s advice, the copy started from scratch again, but an advantage of not copying when asleep is that I can now keep a closer watch on what’s going on. And as of 3:30:07 Elapsed Time, 300GB have been copied.

Yes, when I checked my computer after waking up, the SSD was idle, but the SSD icon was still on my desktop, and when I checked what was on the SSD, all it had on it was about 310GB, and last time I checked the existing 2TD HDD, it had about 670GB on it. But IMHO, none of this matters because after I launched SuperDuper again, it erased the SSD, and it's copying now as we type 🙂

jerrydpi
No problem my friend ❤️ That being said, I just checked my computer, and for some reason SuperDuper has stopped copying. The blue status bar is only about half way, and only 344.79 GB has been copied. FWIW, when I got the info on the SSD this morning before starting over, it did say it had about the same amount on it. I wonder if there is a size limit as to how much one can copy on the free version?
wonshu
Check the log, but this shouldn't happen. Personally I use Carbon Copy Cloner. It's another software that does the same thing. It fully functions for 30 days. Perhaps try that. It can update what's already there! des99
"Copy stopped because the destination drive ejected while SuperDuper! was writing to it. Please check your drive, simplify your connections, restart your Mac and try again." Your SSD drive is disconnecting, going idle/sleep mode, getting too hot, your Mac ejected it, or a cable connection is dodgy - basically, SD is copying to it, but the drive is going away for some reason.
