The demo versions are unlimited, so they are not strictly free, but, like me, I am sure you will end up buying them: http://www.stillwellaudio.com - I have to recommend Vibe EQ (especially the 8k band) and Bombardier Buss Compressor (the drive knob is awesome) and The Rocket compressor (amazing on drums). Don't forget to use them in oversampling mode - they sound SO much better!

Hey everybody, I've got some more freeware that you may or may not know about. Here we go:

Giada 0.6.1 by Monocasual - http://www.giadamusic.com/index.php Giada is a free, minimal, hardcore audio tool for DJs and live performers. How does it work? Just pick up your sample, drop it in any channel and start the show by using this tiny piece of software as a loop machine, drum machine, sequencer, live sampler or yet as an effect (VST) host.

TSE B.O.D. emulates a famous bass processing unit. TSE 808 v2.0 emulates a famous guitare pedal. Both can be found at - http://tseaudio.com/software.html

Betty Middle V2 by DSP Factory - http://www.chrisivanschrago.at/wordpress/?p=554 This is a stereo enhancement plugin that includes a full working M/S matrix.

What can I say? When I take a break from recording, I love searching the web for more freeware in the hopes that it will help some of you that may not be able to afford commercial software, yet want great sound quality. When I first started using a computer to record and sequence music, all I used was freeware, besides my copy of Logic 4. And we're off...

LSS-DJeq - http://www.londonschoolofsound.co.uk/resources/djeq This is a 3-band equalizer frequently found in professional DJ mixers.

Luftikus by Ikjb - http://code.google.com/p/lkjb-plugins/downloads/list Luftikus is a digital adaption to an analog EQ with fixed half-octave bands and additional high frequency boost.

TDR Feedback Compressor II (Beta) - http://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-feedback-compressor-2/ This is definitely a company to watch. "The TDR Feedback Compressor II takes this traditional compression topology to new heights as a state of the art dynamics processor combining an unusual and highly flexible, yet intuitive control scheme. The compressor has been carefully tuned for intuitive and musical operation for almost every situation. No compromises have been made in order to achieve the highest possible quality of dynamic control." I've been using their Proximity plugin and have been getting great results quickly... so this is a no-brainer. But do keep in mind that this is still a Beta release.

For those a little adventurous and looking for granular synthesis apps, checkout HourGlass 1.3.0 from Xenakios Software - http://xenakios.wordpress.com/downloads/ But be aware, you can spend a lot of time tweaking audio with this application. So set aside some time to experiment.

New versions of available of these free russian plug-ins Molot 0.3.1 and Limiter №6 1.0.2

Downloaded both today, and played around with replacing Logic's 'Multipressor' & 'Limiter', with both of these inserts, in an existing project; following them with an Adaptive Limiter plugin.

Very interesting Plugin's (their 64bit too) but like the developer said, you have to take care in gain staging: to an average signal level of 0 dBVU for effective and uniform headroom 8)

Also downloaded the Stillwell's 'Bombardier Buss Compressor' and 'The Rocket compressor'; The Bomb was sweet on a Vox Sub, but sadly these are both 32bit plugs

Tried it yet?

Yes, I tried it briefly last night on guitar and drums...after tweaking a bit I got nice results.

I'm wondering if I'm missing something vital in making this one work right.... if I reduce the output gain by exactly the same amount as the drive is increased, (to avoid loudness bias) I can hear no difference between bypassed and not bypassed, no "tubeness" is evident.

This is without any of the plug's EQ engaged.....

Yeah, it's not super in your face (unless you hit the boost button).

But, when I crank the Drive knob to full, I can definitely hear it "toobing".

If you feed it a 1 kHz tone and follow it with an analyzer, you can see the added harmonics changing with the Drive knob.

There's some 64bit betas...and they've been working on version 3 of their plug-ins (for like 3 years already) which are coming out sometime this year, they promise.

XLN Audio has a free four octave version (2 octaves either side of middle C) of their Addictive Keys sampled piano. Lots of options even with the free version, including some different mic positions and you can save your presets.

Not bad, and easier on the CPU than Truepianos!

J.

Yep, pretty decent for sure although I think Truepianos still reigns with an evener tone. But - very cool what XLN did for creating pianos with completely different vibe via mic positions, sample shifting and so on. I came this close to buying their keys bundle and then I went and listened to the latest Pianoteq demos - I think they've finally got it way more than right with version 4. Will be trying that one soon!

Here's another free offering from Nick Crow Labs - http://nickcrowlab.blogspot.com/2009/05/nick-crow-8505-lead-tube-guitar-amp-vst.html It's a 64bit compatible AU/VST tube guitar amplifier plugin.

Go to http://www.tx16wx.com to checkout a fully featured sampler based on classic hardware, but with modern functionality. This looks impressive for a freeware plugin. And if you like it's features and workflow, you can purchase a 'professional' edition with more features not included in the free version.
