xpander
Has anyone used the free FXpansion compressor yet? How is it? I have been using it more often that I thought I would. I respect FXpansion and their software line so didn't hesitate to try out their FreeComp. I've been using it on all types of source material with great results. Out of curiosity, I've been opening finished sessions and replacing the various buss comps I've used and inserted the one from FXpansion to hear what the difference is. Overall, I think my initial choices were the correct ones, but I was surprised by FreeComp's sound on a couple of dance tracks. It has turned out to be one of the rare freeware offerings that have made me consider purchasing the full product. To me, that's a compliment. - xpander
Rev. Juda Sleaze
Has anyone used the free FXpansion compressor yet? How is it? I tried it on a couple of things, but preferred the sound of Logic's compressor in every case. Probably need to play around with it more to see if I can find a niche for it. xpander
You guys may already know about the freeware bundle of effects from MeldaProduction which can be found at http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstplugins/ , but I'd like to bring attention to the new MFreqShifter. It's capable of full randomization at the touch of a button, adjustable oscillator shapes, and a step-sequencer. I played with it for a few hours last night on a long vocal recording and was able to create some awesome special effects worthy of a Hollywood sic-fi movie. Check it out at http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstplugins/mfreqshifter.php - xpander

Rev. Juda Sleaze
Thanks David T. When they say there is compatibility problems with some hosts and their compressor, is one of those hosts Logic? Are these plug-ins any good?
Presence
Great bass amp head plugin, from the devs website: After months of design and development, our first Bass plug-in is finally here! Based on the real SHB-1 "Extreme Bass Head", built by Ignite Amps for Federico Fulceri, bass player of the italian thrashers Subhuman, featuring 6 triode stages and a 1300W (yes, one-thousand-three-hundred!) Class D power-amp. Download your FREE copy here and ignite your bass needs: http://www.igniteamps.com/audio-plug-ins Edited August 16, 2012 by Presence
Presence
Thanks David T. When they say there is compatibility problems with some hosts and their compressor, is one of those hosts Logic? Are these plug-ins any good? They work pretty good on this configuration here. Only 32 bit though, And I haven't tested them out that much but i like what I've heard so far. Does this mean you are behind these plug-ins? Or was that a quote from the site? They are the best amp sims I've heard, and I can't believe they're free! I'm really excited to hear the bass amp They work pretty good on this configuration here. Only 32 bit though, And I haven't tested them out that much but i like what I've heard so far. jdoo
Computer Music Mag has gone digital, and their monthly freebies for this month are Alchemy Player (+ 300 presets incl) and Tone2's BiFilter: http://www.tone2.com/html/___bifilter2.html . The Alchemy player plug-in, is not the full featured soft synth, but there are some gems among the 300 presets you can get with the AU plugin.. so if you're looking for a few good sounds to plug-n-play... The BiFilter2 seems to be a very nice filter plug-in. You need to subscribe to CM to get these downloads (and there is a lot more than just these 2 plugins avail. for downloading). I subscribed for a single month via iTunes... payin about $4. - but will probably continue the subscription as the freebies above were icing on the cake to a pretty good reading mag. It's a little noisy but i put denoiser after it with my own preset thank you man for the tip....i was trying to figure out how to download it... just make the first step, as always.... Eriksimon
Gonna try it too, but I must say the system requirements are somewhat baffling, even silly: minimum 2 GB of RAM (for a compressor???), minumum Core2Duo 2.53 GHz processor, sounds all a bit odd. And I have a feeling that it sounds exactly like Logics' compressor. But that's just a feeling. Haven't heard the thing yet. http://www.kvraudio.com/product/dcam-freecomp-by-fxpansion
thedivisionbell
I haven't used it much, but I think it's pretty good. It's musically transparent - you sort of don't realize it's on. I think you get some saturation when you raise the input and compensation knobs? Has anyone used the free FXpansion compressor yet? How is it? It is the best gluing compressor I have ever used.... I'll have to try it on a buss now.

xpander
Here's another free synth from http://www.u-he.com/cms/podolski "Podolski is a simple, CPU-efficient virtual analogue synthesizer. Basically a cut down version of FilterscapeVA with just one oscillator, one filter, one envelope and two LFOs, it also features a Zebra-style arpeggiator/sequencer plus chorus and delay effects. Podolski's specialities are the Click parameter (emphasizes the filter attack) and its ability to seamlessly morph between three waveforms (WaveWarp). Podolski has been refurbished with some new presets by Howard Scarr, has undergone a GUI makeover (two new skins) and supports a wider range of plug-in formats. A new English language manual is also included." I'll be checking this out soon when I have some time. - xpander

xpander
Hope everyone is having a fruitful new year. Here is some more freeware I've stumbled across recently: 3 little plugins from http://www.gamesfrommars.fr/plugins/index.htm The Psypan plugin is my favorite here. Checkout http://www.tseaudio.com/software.html for an emulation of a "famous rodent pedal" called R47. Although there are a few other plugins on that page, the R47 is the only one that's been ported to Mac so far. A friend of mine has been experimenting with an interesting plugin called Melodo. You can find it here: http://comelody.com/melodo I'm not sure how to describe it so I'll just quote - "Melodo is a platform for instantly browsing short musical phrases contributed by composers from around the world. Each musical phrase can be used to create new and exciting music by applying the musical creativity of other composers." Interesting enough, it's capable of hosting other AU/VST's as well (though I haven't tried this yet). Also, for those of you looking for free NI Reaktor ensembles, checkout http://www.needanamemusic.com and click on the 'software' tab. And don't leave without listening to some absolutely gorgeous music posted there as well. - xpander

xpander
Thank you for the nice comments. I came across some more freeware in the last couple of days that might be of interest to you guys and gals. All three are 64bit also. Digits from http://www.extentofthejam.com is "a phase distortion synthesizer inspired by Casio's CZ series but takes that form of synthesis to the limit. Create warm pads, glitchy sounds, dirty basses, filthy sweeps, screaming leads, and anything in-between." I personally think it sounds a bit cheesy, but sometimes that can be a good thing depending on the vibe you're going for. LoudMax from http://loudmax.blogspot.com "is a Look-Ahead Brickwall Loudness Maximizer Plugin with a clean transparent sound. It is designed to retain the original character of the music as much as possible even at high compression levels." I've tried this on a full mix as well as individual channel strips . I especially like this effect on drums and synth basses. PitchedDelay from http://code.google.com/p/lkjb-dc12/downloads/list is "a delay that allows the pitching [of] the delayed signal. This can be done within or outside the feedback loop. Besides the pitch shifting it has feedback, a basic filter in the feedback path for signal manipulation and mono, stereo and ping-pong mode per delay." This was an entry in the KVR Developers Challenge 2012. I'm sure you can get the same result with Delay Designer, but it's nice to have options. - xpander
